They maintained the light for us, and together, we can sustain it for future generations.

 

As we approach the 100th anniversary of our Cathedral in 2029, St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Cathedral in Montreal has served as a spiritual haven for countless Armenian families for over fifty years—where we have prayed, celebrated, mourned, gathered, learned, and preserved our and heritage.

 

However, our journey began long before we had a church of our own. In the early 1900s, a small number of Armenians settled in Montreal, and over the years, many others arrived from various parts of the world, some seeking refuge from genocide, war, and persecution. They came from places like Western Armenia, Greece, Istanbul, Egypt, Lebanon, Iran, Ethiopia, and the Middle East, often with little more than their faith, language, and traditions, determined to build future for their children. In those early days, without a church of their own, visiting clergy conducted services wherever space was available, yet the community continued to grow.

 

By the 1960s, the aspiration for a permanent spiritual home in Montreal intensified. In 1969, our community made a remarkable decision, uniting to purchase the church that would become St. Gregory Armenian Cathedral for $250,000—a significant amount at the time. Despite still establishing their lives in a new country, parishioners contributed what they could, organizing fundraising efforts and receiving support from benefactors like Alex Manoogian. They sacrificed for a cause greater than themselves, thinking not just of their own generation but of future children and grandchildren.

 

On December , 1970, the church was consecrated as St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church, and since then, it has witnessed generations of Armenian life in Montreal, from baptisms to weddings, family gatherings, and memorials. More than a building, St. Gregory has been a home for many. However, after nearly a century and countless winters, maintaining this historic structure has become increasingly challenging and costly. Just as past generations rose to the occasion, the responsibility now lies with us.

 

We are launching a campaign to raise $300,000 CAD to preserve and strengthen St. Gregory as we approach its centenary, ensuring that essential repairs and preservation work can be completed for future generations. This campaign transcends mere physical structures; it’s about safeguarding a place where an Armenian child can discover their heritage, where families can gather, and where prayers can continue to be shared. The generations before us could have deemed the task too daunting, yet they chose to sacrifice build for those they would never meet. Now, it's our turn to carry this legacy forward. Every contribution, whether $25, $50, $100,$250, $500, or more becomes part of St. Gregory's ongoing story.
